Guatapé and Rock of Guatapé weather: best time to go

The climate is almost the same all year: cool mornings, mild afternoons. What shapes your trip is the rain, and that does change by month.

Temperature

Guatapé sits at 1,925 m above sea level, and that sets the tone: early mornings are around 13 °C and afternoons 21 to 23 °C, with almost no change between months. There are no seasons. At this altitude the sun burns even when it is cloudy, especially on the 740 steps up the rock.

When it rains

There are two rainy seasons: March to May and September to November. The driest months are June to August and December to February. Sources disagree on the single driest month: Climate-Data says July, while the town's tourism guide, using Weather Spark data, says January. The practical advice is the same: in the rainy season, climb early, since downpours usually come in the afternoon.

Best time to go

For the view from the rock and a boat ride, the dry months are best: mid-December to early March and June to August. They overlap with Colombian holidays, so it is busier and worth booking a hotel in Guatapé early. In the rainy season there are fewer tourists and the landscape is greener; just leave slack in your plans.

Avoid Colombian long weekends and Easter week if you dislike lines. On weekdays at 8 am the rock is much quieter; check the opening hours.

What to pack

If you plan to spend time on the water, read the lake and boat tours too. For getting there, everything is in how to get there from Medellín.
